I agree - I just strim them down and whack the fabric over them. The exception is with brambles (blackberrys) - these are tough as anything and will lift up the fabric in time. I once put a big, thick iron sheet over a bunch of them and they were still there, pale but still definitely kicking and striving for an exit when I moved the sheet over two years later.

I reckon the chemical herbicide could be avoided by laying out the weed fabric further in advance of planting.
